Resurrecting Party Dresses from the 60’s, 80’s and 90’s

It always captures my attention to see people play with their fashion choices. An  event which calls for party dresses is my playground.  I love to see the different looks created by various personalities and styles.

A party is the perfect place to make a statement or try a look which you ordinarily wouldn’t try. The people who knock it out of the park are the ones who choose a look and follow it through by choosing accessories, jewelry, bags and other accents with the same flavor.

Pulling together the total look can be challenging and often pricey. Sometimes going vintage is not only trendy or an unusual conversation piece, but it could also be a low cost way to be a show stopper.

I recently was invited to a NYE wedding. Amongst all the pretty party dresses I saw excellent examples of utilizing different eras to pull together a great look for today.

A few of my fave examples were Jen, Kelly and Jane

Jen was wearing a 60’s inspired vintage teal satin frock, her mother’s sweater trimmed in mink (vintage from 60’s), and silver shimmer strappy heels. A scene from Mad Men with a cocktail completing this look.

Kelly was totally playful in an 80’s black and teal vintage Jessica McClintock dress. She purchased the dress from a vintage store in Bedford Hills. It was brilliant and fit her body to the T. Loved the back shirring detail, which is making a comeback for 2014, along with the skirt longer in the back trend.

Jane found her Val Steiner couture in a thrift shop in LA. The Council Thrift Store for women is a chain that donates to impoverished women with children in the Los Angeles area. Not only was she helping her community, she was also a bridesmaid in this black corset couture gown for the shockingly low price of $8.00. Wow Jane! Deal of the century and you looked fabulous.

My look was not bought vintage, however, I was absolutely following an early 90’s edge. Funny, I believe someone actually said my look was a little Michael Jackson that night. Awesome! I love it!

Play with your fashion! If you can’t find the right dress, go vintage. You will have more options and a story to discuss over cocktails.
